Finally we are seeing a glimmer of hope with the lighter evenings and soon hopefully the better weather but there is no getting away from the fact its been a pretty miserable time for golfers in Manchester over the last few weeks, surely now we are through the worst of the weather and can look forward to a long hot summer….maybe.

We have some fantastic events coming up over the next few weeks at Whitefield Golf Club and it looks set to be another great season here at the club. Things will be kicked off with our last Winter Senior pairs open competition on Wednesday 15th March. Only a few times remaining so if you would like to play then give the pro shop a quick call and we can book you in. We are holding a special rules evening on Thursday 6th April which is selling out fast, what a great opportunity to freshen up your knowledge of the rules and find out how to use the rules to your advantage. The following day on Friday 7th April we will be kicking off the season in style with a US Masters special 4BBB open competition. Whitefield now has Skysports so the golf will be shown all day plus I will be announcing some very special prizes soon.

I have a sneaky confession to make I have been lucky enough to get out for a handful of games over the last few weeks and I have played some of my favourite links courses: Southport & Ainsdale, Conwy and West Lancs. It has been great to be back playing after the winter layoff and I’m excited about the new season. I’ve had to make a couple of changes to my swing over the winter which has been tricky but I finally feel I have my swing under control and I have been shooting some decent scores. Next on the list is Hillside Golf Club early next week and then I will be playing Royal Birkdale Golf Club on Monday 3rd April. I am really looking forward to getting back to Birkdale as it is one of my all time favourite courses and it will be nice to get a look at the course before this years Open Championship. My first experience of Royal Birkdale was in a junior competition back in 2001, I was 16 years old with a 4 handicap and I will never forget the weather that day it was awful. This was my first experience playing on a links course in the wind and to make matters worse it didn’t stop raining. I shot 8 over par 80 and as I drove home with my dad I remember saying I really didn’t like the course and I didn’t know what all the fuss was about. However over time as I returned every year to play in The Birkdale Silver Goblet, a 36 hole scratch competition I realised just how fantastic the course is. The fairway bunkers are extremely well positioned and its a course you have to drive the ball well on. If you play the course in the summer when the rough is up its incredibly difficult. If you get chance to go and watch the open this summer you must as its one of the best spectator course as lots of the greens are surrounded with dunes creating a natural amphitheatre. Its amazing how first impressions can be so wrong!!

The big news at Whitefield at the moment is the launch of our 3 month membership offer. For £150 you can join and play unlimited golf 7 days a week including competitions and getting a handicap.

There has been a large investment in the course over the last few months and this year will see the course at its very best, especially with the latest addition of the turf iron. This new bit of kit will ensure the greens are smooth and a little quicker which will provide a test for all the players that enjoy the course.
